Walmart, Asda owners using their billions to attack rooftop solar Updated for 2026





A recent trend has seen utilities deciding that since they haven’t been able to beat back the rise of rooftop solar companies, they might as well join them (or at least steal their business model).

But the Walton Family, owners of international retail colossus Walmart and the UK’s Asda supermarket chain – as well as a shareholders in a manufacturer of large-scale solar arrays – aren’t ready to give up the fight.

A new report by the Institute for Local Self-Reliance has found that, through their Walton Family Foundation, the Waltons have given $4.5 million dollars to groups like the American Enterprise Institute, the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), and Americans for Prosperity.

These groups are attacking renewable energy policies at the state level and, specifically, pushing for fees on rooftop solar installations. The head of ALEC has even gone so far as to denigrate owners of rooftop solar installations as “freeriders”.

Hold on – the Waltons have solar investments!

But support for groups seeking to halt the rise of clean energy is only half the story.

According to Vice News, the Waltons own a 30% stake in First Solar, a company that makes solar arrays for power plants as “an economically attractive alternative or complement to fossil fuel electricity generation”.

So states its 2013 annual report, which also identifies “competitors who may gain in profitability and financial strength over time by successfully participating in the global rooftop PV solar market” as a threat to First Solar’s future profitability.

Perhaps it was that threat to its long-term strategic plan that led First Solar CEO James Hughes to publish an op-ed in the Arizona Republic voicing his support for a proposal by Arizona Public Service, the state’s biggest energy utility, to charge owners of rooftop solar installations a fee of $50 – $100 a month.

That’s more than enough to wipe out any economic benefits of generating one’s own power. A compromise was eventually reached to adopt a lower fee of roughly $5 per household – but even that has had a chilling effect on the growth of rooftop solar in Arizona, as residential solar installations subsequently dropped 40% in APS territory.

Bryan Miller, president of the Alliance for Solar Choice, said at the time that First Solar’s move was unprecedented: “no solar company has publicly advocated against solar until First Solar did it.”

Big centralised solar vs. small local solar

Having collected its scalp in Arizona, First Solar is now attacking policies that foster rooftop solar in California and Nevada, according to the ILSR report.

“First Solar builds solar arrays for utilities and, as such, stands to benefit if households are blocked from generating their own electricity, even if it means slowing the overall growth of solar”, the ILSR report states.

While this gives the Waltons – a family worth an estimated $149 billion (three Waltons rank among the top 10 richest Americans) – a clear financial incentive to oppose rooftop solar, it doesn’t make much sense in light of Walmart’s very public commitment to solar energy.

But, according to the report, it’s not as much about shrewd business tactics or the future of energy as it is about consolidating power in corporate hands:

“For nearly a decade, the Waltons have presented themselves as environmentalists. But as this report, and our previous reports on Walmart’s environmental impact, demonstrate, beneath the family’s public environmentalism lies a deeper agenda: furthering a highly concentrated, and deeply destructive, corporate economic model. The Waltons’ environmentalism is best understood not as a counterpoint to this imperative, but rather as a tool in service to it.”

Exterminate!

Rooftop solar is a threat to corporatists like the Waltons precisely because it decentralizes power, literally and figuratively.

“It’s moving the US from a system in which electricity generation is controlled by a small number of investor-owned utilities and toward a future in which households produce energy and reap the financial benefits”, the report states

It adds that the solar industry now employs about 143,000 Americans, half of which are rooftop solar installation techs who make, on average, $24 per hour, “more than twice what the average Walmart associate makes.”

To save the world’s wildlife, first we must love it Updated for 2026





While the picky might point out flaws in the methodology, I cannot help but be impressed that large organisations like WWF and ZSL are willing to come out with a grand gesture.

Their report, perhaps ironically entitled ‘Living Planet‘ states that in the last 40 years the planet has lost over 50% of its animals.

Now, they are referring to vertebrates – and also admit that we do not know quite how many there are of most things … but … still this is a breathtaking figure, for anyone who has not been paying attention.

Hedgehogs – down 37% in 10 years

For those that have been paying attention, this sort of decline is already well-known. I have been studying hedgehogs since the mid 1980s – and the anecdotal observations have consistently been of a decline in their numbers.

It was only in 2011 that we (I work with the British Hedgehog Preservation Society and the People’s Trust for Endangered Species) were in a position to get the research done to give us a concrete answer to the scale of the decline.

And when we updated it last year, even I, so deeply involved, was horrified. There has been a 37% decline in hedgehogs in Britain in the last ten years.

That is a faster rate of decline than that being experienced by tigers in the wild.

Extinction is the end of long period of attrition

What most interests me about this report is that it is looking at the numbers of animals themselves. Too often the attention is focussed on the demise of a species. But the moment of extinction is really rather trivial compared to the decades before.

Thom van Dooren described this well in his book, Flight Ways. The loss of the last of a species is nothing compared to the loss of the mass of individuals before that one, which is nothing compared to the loss of functionality within the ecosystem and which is topped off by the evolutionary loss – the millions of years and individuals that have gone in to creating that one, last creature.

All of this is being wiped out by our violence. Van Dooren describes it as a “violence that is often rendered invisible … by its slowness.”

How can we stop that violence? The first thing is to become aware that it is going on – and this report is a valuable step in that direction. But we need to look deeper than a simple awareness as that will tend to give us a false sense of security.

Somehow, this was not worth asking the Prime Minister about

We will look back to what we remember as the golden era of bountiful wildlife – which will be within our lifetime – and hope to recreate such a scene.

But that was already a disastrously denuded landscape. This is the idea of ‘shifting baselines’ that is beginning to get the attention it should. We need to be more ambitious.

As the news of this report broke on Tuesday morning, some attention was paid. But it was treated almost as a light item to insert alongside the real news of economy and fear. The Prime Minister was interviewed on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme. I was not surprised that no mention of this report was made – but I still fumed.

Satish Kumar once said that it is a madness that we concentrate so much on the economy and so little on the ecology – both words stem from the same root – oikos, meaning home.

And ecology means the study of our home – economy, management. To have one without the other is absurd. Having one without the other is why we are suffering such catastrophic loss.

Appreciate the wonder of life – and act to save it

At times the realisation of the extent of loss leaves me gasping – and I do think that there is a need to engage in a form of grieving for what has gone.

But we also need to create change. And for that we need to embrace the rather unscientific notion of love. As Stephen Jay Gould said, “We will not fight to save what we do not love.”

But loving the vulnerable sets you up for grief, so we hold back, erect walls, and numb ourselves with quick fixes. But without taking that risk of falling in love we will always remain removed from the reality of the problem and will never find the solution.

We may be going to hell in a handcart, but we are doing so surrounded by an awe-inspiring world – surrounded by, as Darwin said, “endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful”.

And that includes the people – among whom I hope, so deeply, are already seeded the solutions which will pull us back from this brink.

A long term comittment to unlocking the tidal resource

Rob Hastings, Director of Energy and Infrastructure, The Crown Estate said: “We have been a major player in the development of the offshore renewable energy industry for over 10 years.

“Our commitment to this investment is part of our strategy to explore the potential of tidal stream energy on a commercial scale with a project that offers a crucial stepping stone on the path towards unlocking the nation’s tidal energy potential over the long term.”

The Estate has so far leased over 40 sites for tidal current and wave projects, and has now started the first leasing process for tidal range projects. New seabed rights agreed this summer include:

  • Six new wave and tidal current demonstration zones across the UK.
  • Five new wave and tidal current sites, each with the potential to deliver a project of between 10 and 30 MW.

The Crown Estate is legal owner and manager of the UK’s territorial seabed, giving it a key role in the development of the country’s offshore renewable energy assets. It is also promoting the development the offshore wind, with up to a £100 million of investment.

The Crown Estate has also agreed terms with Forthwind Ltd, a subsidiary of 2-B Energy, for the UK’s first offshore demonstration of two 6MW two-bladed turbines on the seabed at Methil in Scotland.

Two-bladed designs at this scale are a major innovation for the offshore wind industry and the deployment offshore of the turbines at Methil will be the first in the world of its kind.

The company will first build a full-scale onshore prototype in the Netherlands ahead of the two offshore machines planned for Methil, which are anticipated for deployment in 2016 subject to planning consent.

Achieving significant cost reductions

For offshore wind to flourish it’s essential to develop new technologies as costs are roughly double those of onshore wind, making it unaffordable for large scale deployment at current prices.

It’s also considered desirable to move the main focus of wind development out to sea to avoid the environmental problems associated with onshore wind; and because the offshore wind resource is far greater, with higher wind speeds.

Mikael Jakobsson, chief operating officer for 2-B Energy said: “We hope that through this offshore development and demonstration step, and following the completion of our first on-shore demonstrator in early 2015, to be able to validate significant cost reductions in future offshore wind deployment.”

Achieving significant cost reductions

For offshore wind to flourish it’s essential to develop new technologies as costs are roughly double those of onshore wind, making it unaffordable for large scale deployment at current prices.

It’s also considered desirable to move the main focus of wind development out to sea to avoid the environmental problems associated with onshore wind; and because the offshore wind resource is far greater, with higher wind speeds.

Mikael Jakobsson, chief operating officer for 2-B Energy said: “We hope that through this offshore development and demonstration step, and following the completion of our first on-shore demonstrator in early 2015, to be able to validate significant cost reductions in future offshore wind deployment.”

In addition to two-bladed turbine design, 2-B Energy are seeking to further reduce costs by integrating wind turbine technology with innovations in grid and access systems, the installation process and a new operational strategy.

Scotland’s double first: tidal array and twin-bladed offshore wind turbines Updated for 2026





The Crown Estate has committed to invest nearly £10 million into the MeyGen Ltd tidal power development.

The 398MW project in the Inner Sound of the Pentland Firth, Scotland, will require some £50 million of funding for its first phase.

Investors also include Atlantis Resources Ltd, the Department of Energy & Climate Change, and Scottish Enterprise.

The location is both highly challenging and promising due to the fast water speeds, according to the Crown Estate.

“The Inner Sound tidal array project has the potential to play a crucial role in advancing technology and developing essential construction and operating experience on the path towards larger commercial schemes around the UK and worldwide.”

A long term comittment to unlocking the tidal resource

Rob Hastings, Director of Energy and Infrastructure, The Crown Estate said: “We have been a major player in the development of the offshore renewable energy industry for over 10 years.

“Our commitment to this investment is part of our strategy to explore the potential of tidal stream energy on a commercial scale with a project that offers a crucial stepping stone on the path towards unlocking the nation’s tidal energy potential over the long term.”

The Estate has so far leased over 40 sites for tidal current and wave projects, and has now started the first leasing process for tidal range projects. New seabed rights agreed this summer include:

  • Six new wave and tidal current demonstration zones across the UK.
  • Five new wave and tidal current sites, each with the potential to deliver a project of between 10 and 30 MW.

The Crown Estate is legal owner and manager of the UK’s territorial seabed, giving it a key role in the development of the country’s offshore renewable energy assets. It is also promoting the development the offshore wind, with up to a £100 million of investment.
